On 6th August, 2025, the Facebook page, Global-news, published a post claiming that “the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of The Gambia is currently recruiting staff for several positions.

The post included a flyer with a photo of the newly appointed IEC Chairman, Joseph Colley, and listed the following positions as open for applications:

Assistant Regional Election Officers (6 positions — Grade 7)
• polling Station Staff (Grade 5)
• Field Supervisors (Grade 5)
• Drivers
• Enrollment Agents (Grade 8)
• Office Assistants (Grade 5)

It further urged applicants to “submit your application in the portal now” via the official IEC website: https://iec.gm. The post also featured the IEC logo, an “APPLY NOW” button and provided a URL in capital letters (HTTPS://IEC.GM) intended to add “credibility” to the claim.

Fact-Check

The post, which is not so popular (53 likes, 13 comments most of which already dismissed it as a scam, 1 share), is nonetheless capable of undermining personal information of unsuspecting job seekers.

We click on the link to understand the trick being used on facebook users, but were prompted by the following warning:

“Deceptive site ahead

“Firefox blocked this page because it may trick you into doing something dangerous like installing software or revealing personal information like passwords or credit cards.

“Advisory provided by Google Safe Browsing.”

A review of the Independent Electoral Commission’s official website (iec.gm) shows no active job advertisement or recruitment notice.

In fact, the last official press release shared by IEC was on 26, June, 2025 was about the launch of validation workshop for their Strategic Plan 2025-2029.

In addition, FactCheck Gambia reviewed the Commission’s verified social media platforms, including their Facebook page and X account. No recent posts regarding staff recruitment were found on any of these platforms.

We also reached out to an official at the IEC, who responded on Thursday that the job advert by  Global-news is false and stated that the Commission is not recruiting at this time.

Any official announcement, according to him, would be made through their website and verified social media accounts.

On 7 August, 2025, the IEC issued a press release dismissing the ad as fake. “The IEC is not currently conducting recruitment of any kind,” its Chairman, Joseph Colley, said in a statement on Thursday.

Verdict

The claim that the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is currently recruiting staff is FALSE.
