Fact-Check
As the message went viral, and people started asking questions, Fact-Check Gambia deemed it necessary to fact-check the veracity of the message making the rounds.
The viral message was accompanied by a link which shows the following message when clicked on: “Wave – 7th Anniversary Gift: Fill out this survey for a chance to win D14,000.”
It also comes with a form that is meant tp trick Wave users into providing confidential information to the people behind the link – typical of online scammers tactics.
The company, Wave Gambia, has since released a statement debunking the viral message making rounds on WhatsApp.
“Dear valued customers, We are aware of a fake message circulating on WhatsApp claiming Wave is offering rewards for its 7th anniversary. Please note this message is not from Wave and is part of a scam tactic designed to trick you into sharing your codes,” Wave said.
“Wave will never run promotions or rewards through unofficial links or WhatsApp messages. All our official announcements are shared on our platforms.”
Wave then reminded its customers to never share their PIN or validation codes with anyone – even if they claim to represent Wave.
Wave was co-founded in 2018 by its CEO, Drew Durbin and Lincoln Quirk, Head of Product. Burbin was already a founder and CEO of Sendwave from 2012-2020.
In 2018, Durbin and Quirk launched a new independent corporation called Wave “with the mission to bring digital finance to everyone in Africa” and was piloted in Senegal from within the Sendwave ecosystem and later establish in Ivory Coast in 2021.
